Previous Story Ernie Irvin Tomorrow will mark the one-year anniversary of the day the joyful celebration in Hockeytown turned into shock and concern over a limousine accident. It will also mark the day a race car driver who also suffered a closed head injury, completed his triumphant comeback here in Michigan. Today, driver Ernie Irvin is reaching out to the Red Wings family. We talked with him about his comeback from the brink of death. Ernie Irvin - "I remember nothing about the accident. I remember the night before and 21-days later." Ernie Irvin was a lightning-fast contender for the Winston cup championship in 19-94. "Ernie is alive. His heart is beating and he's doing it on his own." In a frightening instant, during a practice session at Michigan Speedway, his tire deflated and his car hit the wall at 170-miles per hour. Critical brain injuries left him with only a ten-percent chance for survival. Ernie Irvin - "Yeah, I wanna race. That's all my life has ever been, is racing." Ernie battled hard, and landed back in the driver's seat after a grueling year of rehabilitation. Ernie Irvin - "I just had to re-learn all the things I knew before. To walk and to talk and function." Ernie was back in Michigan, the day a limousine wreck would change the lives of Vladamir Konstantinov and Sergei Monatsokonov forever. Ernie Irvin -"We were watching the news, found out about the limo accident with some of the Red Wings involved. It's amazing. It kinda brought back a lot of memories. Irvin - "When the hockey players got hurt, it's like part of their family. Winston Cup racing is the same way. It's one big family." Ernie says his recovery was complete the day he got back behind the wheel. But race fans felt he came full circle when he captured the checkered flag exactly one year ago.. at the Michigan track that almost took his life. He returns to the track this weekend and he's extending an invitation to Vladamir Konstaninov and his family. Ernie Irvin - "We're trying to get it to where he could be our guest at the racetrack." Vladdy and Sergei were at Joe Louis Arena last night. Watching the Wings' miracle comeback. For both men, their own comeback will be even harder. But Ernie Irvin is a man who believes. Ernie Irvin -"Those are the things that make me realize how lucky and fortunate I am because I'm able to get back and do the things I've done before. Racing fans living my accident through me. And hockey fans lived their accident with them." Ernie Irvin races Sunday in Brooklyn, Michigan defending his championship in the Miller-Lite-400.
