Previous Story Keeping Women on Hormones Hormone Replacement Therapy can ease the transition through menopause for women. As well as protect against heart disease and bone loss. But fear of Breast Cancer often causes women to abandon the therapy. A new study shows that doctors can overcome this fear if they try hard enough. Barbara Stainbrook/takes estrogen - "I feel I could tell him about anything and at any time, not just about health problems, but I feel if I had a personal problem, I could talk to him also." At 62, Barbara Stainbrook trusts her doctor. And according to new research, when it comes to staying on Hormone Replacement Therapy, that trust is important. Nationally about 30 percent of women stay on Estrogen long enough to see any benefits. Dr. David Halbert/Penn State Gynecologist - "I think the main thing is the ability to simply talk back and forth and deal with the fears or the problems as they occur." Doctor David Halbert is an OBGYN at Penn State's College of Medicine. He did his own study. Dr. David Halbert - "And at the end of five abd a half years, 85 percent were still on them. So it was a very different result than what has been presented nationally." Experts believe it's the trust patients had in their doctor that increased compliance. One fear many women have about taking Estrogen is the increased risk of Breast Cancer, but talking with their doctor may eliminate that fear. Dr. David Halbert - "The fear of cancer and the fear of weight gain and some of the other things that women have concerns about are really very minimal if at all a problem on long-term estrogen taking." For most women, Doctor Halbert says, the benefits of protecting against heart disease, Osteoporosis, and Alzheimer's outweigh the risks. Barbara consulted with her doctor and did her own research before going on Estrogen. Barbara Stainbrook -"And I never felt that I couldn't call and talk about it if I wanted to change my mind." But what if you can't do that with your doctor? Dr. David Halbert - "You find a new doctor in the first place to, to whom you can relate." Barbara's been taking Estrogen for 17 years and believes she's healthier because of it. It's estimated that 38-percent of women will die from heart attacks. Doctors believe half of those deaths could be prevented with Estrogen Therapy.
