Varicose Veins
It's the season to bare some skin.
But millions of women are afraid to show their legs because of varicose veins.   There's a new technique that's shining a light on this embarrassing and painful problem.

At 34 Debra Gregg prefers wearing slacks to shorts.

Debra Gregg, has varicose veins - "It's embarrassing cause I'm only, you know, I'm young.  I didn't like the idea of having them, but they didn't bother me so much until they started hurting, and then I realized I had to do something about them."

Debra's talking about her varicose veins.  After giving birth to her second child, varicose veins showed up causing trouble.

Dr. Robert Weiss, American Dermatologic Society - "Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves.  Those veins start to
expand in size as the blood fills up those veins and then they look varicose to our... to our eye."

Doctor Robert Weiss is with the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.  He says before you can treat the varicose vein, you have to find it.  Sounds easy, but it's not.

Dr. Robert Weiss - "We've been having to mark the vein with the patient standing, because that's when the vein is bulging. but when a patient lies down, the vein is not bulging, it's very hard to see."

But now there's a new option called transillumination.  The hand-held device uses fiber optics to carry an intense halogen light to the skin.  Varicose veins absord the red light and look dark.

Dr. Robert Weiss - "Transillumination makes these veins visible, and therefore we can mark them and we can treat them."

Debra Gregg - "The doctor could see exactly what he was looking for, exactly where to put the needle in.  And that, I think it's, i think it's great."

There are a variety of treatments for varicose veins.  Debra's having her veins injected with an irritating solution that causes them to swell.  Then, eventually they disappear.
