Previous Stories Cancer Survival Strategy Remarkable breakthroughs in cancer research are grabbing the headlines lately. Most of these treatments are years away from helping people, but part of surviving cancer is in the hands of the patient. Sharon florin, ovarian cancer survivor - "The first time I heard 'ovarian cancer' i didn't know anything about the disease, other than I'd heard that Gilda Radner had had the disease and had died." That was three years ago. When Sharon Florin heard that diagnosis, she got on the internet. She joined a support group. She educated herself about her cancer. Dr. Roy Sessions, surgical oncologist - "Patient education is really a fundamental process in the cancer strategy of 1998." Doctor Roy Sessions of Beth Israel Medical Center says education can ease some of the fear cancer patients feel. And fear is a very real threat. Dr. roy sessions "fear brings out some bizarre behavior in people with normally good judgement." Bizarre behavior like lung cancer patients who still smoke- it really happens. So the first thing a little education should teach patients is to change their habits like smoking, poor diet, and a lack of exercise. Dr. Roy Sessions - "In many cancers, there's a defined early period there where a close follow-up is really important--- and a patient's compliance with that is essential." So patients need to stick with their treatment plan. Sharon now leads a support group, to educate other patients. some people may feel more comfortable confiding in family or a religious leader. Sharon Florin - "Knowing that each day is special, and no one knows what's going to happen tomorrow, and cancer survivors really know that much more than most other people, I think."
