Previous Stories Shaken Baby Syndrome The British nanny murder trial brought "shaken baby syndrome" into the national spotlight. But a poll finds half of all babysitters do not know that shaking a baby amounts to child abuse. No one likes to listen to a baby cry so why are these seventh graders? It's part of a new project developed by the Junior League of York, Pennsylvania, to inform the public about shaken baby syndrome.  Lisa winer is co-director of the project. Lisa Winer, shaken baby syndrome project - "The biggest precipitating factor in shaking a baby is a crying child.  And that is the frustration taken out on that child when they can't--when the caretaker cannot calm the baby." Most of these students babysit and many will become parents, so it's important they know the dangers of shaking a baby. Instructor - "pretend that this jar is your skull.  The egg is your brain and the yolk is your blood.  When that -- when a child is shaken, the brain slams back and forth... the blood comes out into the brain." The students learn that serious injury can occur within seconds. Student - "it can cause blindness, brain damage." Student - "they could be paralyzed." Student - "...spinal cord injuries or death." Students also learn what to do when feeding, changing or rocking a crying baby doesn't help. Student "I'd probably give it to either my parents or an adult." Student "...give it to my parents or the parents of the child." And when parents ask "what did you learn in school today?" these kids will say... Instructor and students "never, never, never shake a baby." An important lesson that may save a child's life. You can get a "crying card" to place on your own refrigerator.
