Backyard Safety
With summer underway, kids are heading outside to play. Here are some tips on how to keep your backyard and your children safe.

19-month-old Grace Tang keeps her parents on their toes.

Kimberly Neimela Tang, grace's mother - "We really watch her, especially when she's around the water and the pond."

Grace's parents want to avoid meeting a doctor like John Loiselle, an emergency room physician at Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.  He says, children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water.

Dr. John Loiselle, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children - "I would say never underestimate any source of water you have in your neighborhood, whether it's a small creek, whether it's a pond, whether it's a pool..."

He recommends putting fences around water sources as well as constantly watching your kids.  But that doesn't mean keeping them with you when you're mowing the lawn.   And remember, never let your kids ride on the mower.

Dr. John Loiselle - "We frequently have children who will fall off and have a foot or something fall beneath the mower, so that certainly is not recommended."

Don't leave lawn tools sitting around outside... and if you use lawn chemicals, read the instructions carefully.

Dr. John Loiselle - "It's generally probably preferable to apply it during a point where there will be 24 hours where the lawn is not going to be used."

Try childproofing your lawn, by walking through your yard and looking for potential problems.

Dr. John Loiselle - "Are there exposed nails on any swing sets? are there pipes sticking out of the ground? Are there sources of water that could be a potential problem?"

For now the Tangs feel secure, and look forward to a long summer outdoors.

Kimberly Niemela Tang - "I want her to be able to enjoy the outdoors."

Doctors advise you to treat lawn chemicals with the same caution you use with medications.   Keep them locked up, in a place that kids can't reach.
