Previous Stories Acupuncture Gloria Havican/Acupuncture patient - "I was having chronic pain to the point that I would vomit...the pain was so bad. If you slip a needle under your skin you feel a mild pulse from the electrode and that's it." Gloria Havican tried other therapies for the chronic pain in her jaw. But none of them worked.. until she tried a Chinese medical approach that's been around for 5-thousand years: Acupuncture. Gloria Havican - "It keeps the level of pain at a level that I can function." Dr. Silas Cheuk/ Oakwood Hospital - "Maybe we'll never know exactly why it works, but we know it works." Doctor Silas Cheuk has been doing acupuncture for twenty years. Oakwood hospital recently launched an alternative medicine research center, where non-traditional treatments are getting mainstream acceptance. In Acupuncture, needles are inserted under the skin for relief of symptoms like nausea, for chronic conditions like asthma or to relieve pain. Depending on the location of the pain, doctors may insert this needle about an eighth of an inch, or this needle up to three inches. Stanley Olech/Acupuncture patient - "The doctor asked me are you scared of the needle? I told him no. I'd rather have that needle pain than what I've got on my foot." Stanley Olech gets shooting pains in his leg from diabetic neuropathy. Standard therapies failed. As a last-ditch effort, he tried Acupuncture. Stanley Olech - "It feels like a really creepy thing, putting in them needles. It feels like all the pain's going away. like it's just disappearing." You walked in this room a few minutes ago. You came out of your treatment. How do you feel? Stanley - "I feel great, like I'm walking on a cloud!" Last fall, experts assembled by the National Institutes of Health concluded that Acupuncture is a worthy alternative to drugs and surgery. In many cases it's cheaper. perhaps that's why seven states mandate insurance payments for Acupuncture. Michigan is not among them. Dr. Silas Cheuk - "In Michigan, very very few insurance companies pay for the procedure." Michigan State employees with Blue Cross-Blue Shield do get reimbursed. But patients like Stanley, who rely on Medicare, still pay out of pocket. Until Congress changes the law, he's willing to foot the bill. Stanley Olech - "I go on a treadmill. I do that bicycle. Today, I feel like a new man." Home | Upcoming Stories | Previous Stories |Survey | About Healthy Living | E-Mail
