Previous Stories Is your kid a genius? Whiz-kids can be truly amazing. But sometimes the signs of genius are more subtle. In a competitive world, more and more parents are hoping to understand the secret of genius. When you think of genius the recent movie "Good Will Hunting" comes to mind. The uneducated young man who solved complex math equations, he obviously hadn't studied for it. He was gifted, which means having a great natural ability. At 11, Lief Liebmann is also gifted. A fifth grader, Lief reads at a ninth grade level and does math at about an eighth grade level. Lief Liebmann/11 years old - "I feel like a regular kid, just not over superior or anything like that." Lief thinks and expresses himself on a deeper level than most kids his age. Academically, about 3 percent of children are gifted. Lenny Liebmann/Lief's father - "It's just the way he used language I think from the beginning, the way he would write and draw." A child, like Lief, who shows intellectual, artistic, or motor skills of people several years older, is considered gifted. and there are other signs. Lea Ybarra/Johns Hopkins Academic Youth Ctr. - "If a child is very curious and learns things very rapidly and very quickly." Doctor Lea Ybarra runs the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth at Johns Hopkins University. She says its crucial to identify gifted students early. If their academic needs aren't met, they may get bored and do poorly in school. Lief attends Creighton School for the Gifted in Matawan, New Jersey. But how do parents know if their child needs a special school? Lea Ybarra - "Work with their schools and their teachers and their school counselors to make sure that their children get tested." Testing can be verbal or written. through Johns Hopkins International Talent Search, 76- thousand youngsters were tested last year. Students who do well qualify for special enrichment programs. 11-year old Michael Zuckerman aced the test. Michael Zuckerman/11 years old - "The hardest part was actually going to the place I tested at. I'm not accustomed to large school buildings. I was very intimidated." Which brings us to an important point. These talented youngsters are still just youngsters. Liz Zuckerman/Michael's mother -"Emotionally that child, regardless of how smart he may be, is still emotionally his chronological age." The challenge for parents is... Lea Ybarra - "Trying to mesh both the social environment with the academically challenging environment." Lief balances his love for reading and the arts with playing soccer with his little brother, Asa. Asa Liebmann/ Lief's brother - "It's really fun living with my brother. He's the coolest, like the best." Gerda Liebmann/Lief's mother - "Cause he's very, very lovable. He's very bright and caring." And to this family, that's the greatest gift of all. Doctor Karen Puhsorik, a professor of early childhood education at Eastern Michigan University, says parents can look for these signs of genius. Does the child tackle problems with a creative approach, learn or memorize quickly, use a large vocabulary, ask complex questions, and engage in long periods of concentration? You can nurture a child's abilities with challenging tasks. Support their interests and be flexible about activities. Also encourage social growth.
