A study in today's Journal of the American Medical Association Examined why people are turning to herbs, acupuncture, and other methods of alternative healing. Doctor Steven Margolis of Alternacare in Sterling Heights represents a growing trend. 95-percent of patients using alternative medicine do not want to give-up conventional treatment. Dr. Steven Margolis - "When you combine the two, I think that's when patients do the best." The National Survey found the most common reasons for turning to alternative treatments include: chronic pain, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, addictions, arthritis and headaches. Dr. Steven Margolis - "Without a doubt patients seeking alternative treatments are more educated than the rest of the practice in general." The National Study found these patients are, on average, not only smarter, but sicker. They study all the alternatives. But they often wait until the last minute to try an alternative approach. Dr. Steven Margolis - "We're seeing an awful lot of cancer patients. Unfortunately when its spread throughout the body, that's not the time to be seeking herbal treatments." Doctor Margolis believes herbal remedies can offer hope to cancer patients when taken early. But he does "not" recommend that patients abandon traditional cancer treatments.
