Diabetes Kidney Study

Althia Emmons - "The reason I got into the study was because of my sister. She
died of kidney failure."

Althia Emmons has type-two diabetes. After watching her sister die, she vowed
to do anything she could to stay off dialysis, or avoid a transplant.

That's why she's taking part in a nationwide study involving the drug Irbesartan, sold under the brand name Avapro.

Avapro is an accepted therapy for high blood pressure. Because it opens and
relaxes blood vessels, it's hoped the drug will prevent the kind of kidney damage suffered by diabetics.

The number of people on dialysis is expected to rise to 400-thousand in the next century. The typical diabetic who suffers kidney damage will need dialysis after 10 to 15 years.

Dr. Robert Michaels - "If we could lengthen this timetable from 15 to 20 or 30 years, many patients would never require dialysis or transplant."

Althia Emmons/Diabetes Patient - "I have talked to my daughter about a kidney, and she agreed to give me one if I got to that point."

Althia is hoping she won't need a kidney transplant from her daughter, Lea. And after six months in the study group, she's feeling positive about the future.

Althia - "I take my blood sugar. I'm saying Wow! Is this real? I was always tired. I had no energy, was lifeless at work. I slept all the time. And I don't do any of that anymore. I feel wonderful."
