Cardinal Virtues

It's more proof of the powerful mind-body connection. People who feel at peace with themselves tend to be healthier.
And moralists claim that inner strength begins with the four Cardinal Virtues.

Father John West/Detroit Archdiocese - "We all have inner strengths."

We live in a world where faith is tested everyday.

Frank Stella/ Praying in church - "Holy. Holy. Holy. Lord, God of Heaven and might. Heaven and Earth are full of your glory."

Doctors call on their faith to help heal the sick.

Neighborhood Rally/ Singing in Streets - "He's got the drug needles in his hands."

Neighbors call on their faith to heal a wounded community.

Dawn Yurich/Donated kidney to Fiance - "We realized how serious all that was and it was really sad, really scary."

Families in crisis pray they can make the right decisions. The four virtues, rooted in Greek philosophy and embraced by the Church, celebrate the strengths of humanity: prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude.

Father John West/Detroit Archdiocese - "When the choice is between good and bad, we know where we should move. But prudence is helpful when we have to pick between goods."

Dawn Yurich faced such a choice when she learned she was a tissue match for her fiance, who needed a kidney.

Dawn Yurich/Donated kidney to Fiance - "I couldn't go through my life thinking I could have helped and didn't."

Even when the choices seem easy, we can still choose poorly, indulging in excess.

Father John West/Detroit Archdiocese - "We always need to be moving toward balance in our life, and that's what the cardinal virtue of temperance is all about. Justice reminds us that we live in a community."

While justice shows compassion for our neighbors, fortitude shows strength.

Father John West/Detroit Archdiocese - "Everybody has fortitude. Sometimes it just needs to be drawn forth."

Can the four virtues make you healthier? Research at Harvard University suggests there is healing power in prayer.

Dr. Herbert Benton/ Harvard University - "Belief has an extraordinary powerful healing effect."

Father John West/Detroit Archdiocese - "All of these attitudes can, not just talk about a healthier person, but I think a healthier society."

Doctor Herbert Benson of Harvard, who believes in the extraordinary power of prayer, looked at smokers. He found that smokers who go to church on a regular basis live longer and
suffer fewer cancers. Other research shows that heart surgery patients are much more likely to survive if they have strong religious faith.
