Previous Stories Sloth Home gym equipment is selling at a rate eight-times faster than it was just a decade ago. Yet our waistlines are growing and much of that exercise equipment is gathering dust in our basements. As we continue our look at the seven deadly sins Channel Seven's Denise Dador examines Sloth in the nineties, when laziness has become a trendy transgression. Melissa Smith - "I'll be watching tv and I'll think maybe I should go out for a jog or something. And I never do." Tom Copenhaber - "I have a busy schedule." John Mcnulty - "Time is a big factor." Elizabeth Saelzler - "Half the time you're just sitting around watching tv anyway, so I think yeah, time would be an excuse." Perhaps it is human nature to avoid exertion, to prefer the couch to the gym. Sure, many people are committed to staying fit. Don Potter - "So many others will have their largest meal of the day at dinnertime and then go watch tv. Worst thing one can possibly do." Don Potter heads the Institute for Health Improvement in Southeast Michigan, which found that lifestyle choices are to blame for half of all ailments that kill us in metro Detroit. Lifestyle choices like so-called "cocooning." Don Potter - "It's a common term now. It means people stay within their homes, they don't go outside. They hit that couch." A whole sinful sub-culture has emerged that caters to the couch potato. From universal remotes to the laziest lazy-boys and the most sloth-ful sofas. Steve Collins - "Hello! I'm Steve Collins and I wanna demonstrate the ultimate couch potato. We have a drop down table with a massage unit. also we offer you a heating unit. Also, this particular unit offers you a speaker phone. If you don't wanna get up to answer your calls, just plug your phone right into the potato couch." Father John West - "That too needs to be held in balance. That our whole life doesn't become that of a couch potato. Our bodies need rest but we also need to have activity to balance off the rest." So we have become a conflicted combination of slackers.. and acheivers.. fighting our own worst instincts, with the best of intentions. Andy Washington - "Actually, I have my sweatpants in the back of the van there because I was gonna run after work, but then I decided to play guitar instead. I do what I like to do, instead of exert myself." Home | Upcoming Stories | Previous Stories |Survey | About Healthy Living | E-Mail
