It's been seventeen centuries since Pope Gregory the Great first outlined the list of capital sins.. gluttony, lust, greed, wrath, sloth, envy and pride. Now, a new movement is growing to return America to a so-called "moral center." Tonight, we begin a special series that examines modern America's battle with the seven deadly sins. And we begin with the battle of the bulge! Jake Schutter - "Fast food, carryout, take out. I eat pasta everyday. Plates of it, big plates." Jake Schutter - "We want six dogs please." I think especially with this capital sin, moderation is what we're always looking for." Gluttony is also just plain unhealthy. And those of us living in metro Detroit are especially guilty. A report by the Institute for Health Improvement in Southeast Michigan finds fifty-percent of all our health problems are the direct result of lifestyle. And the number-one lifestyle problem.. is gluttony. Over-indulging and poor diet is blamed for 300-thousand deaths each year in Southeast Michigan alone. But warnings about our future health often go ignored when we're at the dinner table. Father West/Detroit Archdiocese - "The whole purpose of the capital sins and the teachings on gluttony is not so much looking at the future, but looking at the present. The changes need to happen now." And it's not just adults who need to be worried about their food choices. A recent study found one in five Michigan school kids are overweight.
