Viagra

A problem that used to stay undercovers is openly being talked about everywhere because of a new pill for male impotence called Viagra.

Here in the Detroit area the pill has resulted in an avalanche of calls from men, and some women, looking to restore or improve their sex lives.

Ever since the FDA approved Viagra for treatment of impotence in men Southfield Urologist Dr. James Relle's phones ring off the hook.

Dr. James Relle/Urologist - "They're very excited about the option
of an oral pill, first one shown to work."

A study of four thousand men yielded a 70 percent success rate, before Viagara, men often dealt with impotence in silence.

Roger Katz/Viagra patient - "It is psychologically debilitating to know that you're never gonna have sex again.. it just, it take
away part of your life."

After Viagara.

Roger Katz/Viagra patient - "Once again I can have a normal, healthy, vibrant, enjoyable sex life with my partner. and my partner will be happier."

And so results like this are leading to lots and lots of prescriptions.

Dr. James Relle/Urologist - "Easily up to ten a day."

Across town at Beaumont, a similar response.

Dr. William Spencer/Beaumont Hospital Urologist - "Huge,
dramatic.. men were aware this was coming."

In the last two weeks, doctors in this office have written more than 300 Viagra prescriptions and they've fielded hundreds of calls and some of those calls are from women.

Dr. William Spencer - "Several have and several husbands have called, regarding their wives."

Some researchers believe that just like in men, viagra can improve blood flow for women resulting in a more fulfilling sexual experience, but at this time doctors are warning women not to try it.

Dr. William Spencer - "Until there is a FDA approval and b.. hold off on prescribing indiscriminately."

Dr. William Spencer - "Women should not be taking.. approval by the FDA."

Viagra does have side effects like headaches, indigestion and a stuffy nose.. and it it can have a bad interaction with nitrate medication used for heart disease.

As for healthy men, hoping to enhance their sex lives with Viagra, it's probably a waste of money. Doctors say the pill works against a specific medical condition and taking more than one pill a day, will not have any extra effect. And marriage counselors are cautioning that a sex-pill will not solve deeper relationship issues between couples. In fact, the pressure to have sex that comes with a pill may be too much for some troubled marriages to handle.
