Working Moms and  Daycare

Two factors are at work here, driving the child-care crisis.
One is, that more and more mothers are working. The other is that the extended family is often not available as a cushion for new parents. But we found with creativity and caring, parents are making it work.

Every day like clockwork Claudia Foerg picks up her two young children at Sunny Skies Daycare. Baby Emily and two year old Nathan already sense it's time to go home. She finds Nathan getting a diaper change.

Claudia Foerg/working mom - "I'll be right with you"

...and Emily finishing up a snack.

Claudia Foerg/working mom - "Hi what are you doing?"

As a high school teacher, Claudia is one of millions of working moms waking a tight rope between career and kids.

Claudia Foerg/working mom - "I like the mix. I feel more complete with the mix."

New moms often feel spit between raising their kids and keeping their jobs. Dads don't usually experience these feelings of being torn. Claudia felt guilty about leaving her oldest child in daycare.

Claudia Foerg/working moms - "The first one was the hardest for me."

Dr. T. Berry Brazelton/Pediatrician - "Guilt is a healthy thing.. think about it."

The nation's premier baby expert Dr. T. Berry Brazelton offers this advice.

Dr. T. Berry Brazelton/Pediatrician - "I'd use that guilt to make it
work, kids are not going to suffer."

Claudia's first son didn't suffer at all, in fact he's benefited.

Claudia Foerg/working mom - "He's more advanced in school."

And there are other positives, a recent survey found daycare kids are better behaved than those who receive one on one supervision.

But experts agree no matter what situation you chose, the quality of daycare is what's most important.

Claudia Foerg/working mom - "I shopped around for a good daycare..I chose this place, because I  like what they do here."

And Dr. Brazelton says when get at home, here's how to make the minutes count:

-Save time for fun each day.
-Make each task like laundry or doing dishes a chance for positive
interaction.
-Always express interest in your child's day and plan all your vacations as family time.

Dr. Brazelton - "I think the ones who really take it seriously know how to deal with stress. Enjoy your kids and the time you have with them."

Doctor Brazelton offers this advice for working parents committed to quality time with their kids:

Relieve any work tension before you get home. That way you can concentrate on your kids once you get there.

Teach kids early to share in the chores. Not only does it help get things done, it fosters a feeling of family and team-work.

And be realistic, avoiding the "super-mom" or "super-dad" syndrome. Your kids should love you for who you are.. not how much you can do for them.
