Surgical  Mistakes

Iris Grant - "There are a lot of good doctors. Unfortunately, accidents do happen."

Iris Grant's bones were crumbling. She needed surgery just to keep her neck
from breaking.

Iris Grant -  "i was told that arthritis was eating up my spinal cord and if i didn't have the surgery i was gonna die or be a quadraplegic."

Doctors at William Beamont Hospital fused her first and second vertebrea at the top of the neck, while Iris was lying face-down in a horse-she headrest.

Iris - "I was repositioned and my position was not checked. Instead of resting here on my forehead I was rested on my eyes. I do remember telling them I can't open my eyes. And my eyes were open."

Iris had gone in for back surgery and came out blind. Totally blind. The cause
of her blindness?

Iris - "Mistake. Human error."

Surgery is unique among medical treatments, requiring you to be extra vigilant "before" you're put under.

Dr. Frank Lewis, Chairman of Surgery, Henry Ford Hospital - "Where else do you willingly subject yourself to assault of one sort or another and allow yourself to be put to sleep and have something done to you which might be quite harmful?"

Doctor Frank Lewis is the Chairman of Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He says patients should not be intimidated by the "white coat."

Dr. Lewis - "I think patients are often reticent to ask questions they think might be a little too probing or perhaps even embarrassing to the doctor."

Iris - "Question and keep questioning until you get answers."

You can call the State Board of Medicine to check on your surgeon's license or history of complaints. but the call is not free.

The number is 1-900-555-8374. It costs one-dollar-and-fifty-cents every
minute. The number is frequently busy.

Doctor Lewis also recommends looking for a surgeon with a good base of experience. And check-out published data on the procedure, paying close
attention to the risks.

Dr. Lewis - "Patients don't always want to know the bad things that can happen. They may think the answer may be bad news, and they don't wanna hear bad
news."

Iris - "I used to run into walls and cabinets quite frequently. I started going into panic attacks, anxiety."

Iris' life is changed forever. But as she learns to continue her passions of ceramics, macrame, and silk flower arrangements without the gift of eyesight. She is crusading to help other patients become their own advocates for safer surgery.

Iris - "You have the right. You should be very active in what you are dealing with. You are allowed to find out this information. If they say no, then say goodbye."
