Nada Joseph Battling Breast Cancer

Cancer is a disease that attacks the body and the spirit. Studies have proven that the patients who do best, are those who draw upon traditional faith as well as modern medicine.

Nada Joseph used to run three miles everyday through the white birch trees of her home in Michigan's upper peninsula. Her tribal home is in Minnesota. But breast cancer forced her to come to Detroit for treatment. With the strong support of her family and her culture, Nada did not come here alone.

Nada Joseph/battling breast cancer - "I was diagnosed on April 29th with breast cancer and I've been battling it ever since."

Bonnie Wallace/Nada's sister - "We are members of the Fond du Lac band of Chippewa Indians in Minnesota. Our culture plays a very strong role in our everyday lives."

When 39-year-old Nada Joseph learned that her breast cancer had returned,
three months after having a double mastectomy, her family drew upon Native
American tradition, making her a quilt that tells the story of Nada's life.

Bonnie Wallace - "With many American Indian tribes you'll see a star quilt pattern that is a part of their culture. So in this quilt we have the star of our family, Nada,
in the middle of the starburst."

Nada Joseph - "There's not one picture on that quilt that doesn't have a wonderful story to it."

Nada Joseph - "It's gotta lot of feeling, a lot of love. I'm glad that I have it."

Nada just underwent a stem cell transplant at the Karmanos Cancer Center in
Detroit. Now she's on her way back home to Michigan's upper peninsula.
With her medicine bag and the blessing of a medicine man, she plans to add to
the story of her life, by adding to the quilt.

Nada Joseph - "I'm gonna start from the first day I'm cancer-free."

Nada Joseph - "Smiling with my hair." (laughs)

Bonnie Wallace - "We lean very heavily toward the spiritual aspect in our culture throughout this."

Nada Joseph - "Anybody that ever experiences this, I just want them to know that you have to keep the faith. That's the most important thing. And believe, if you do
those two things, you'll make it."

By tribal law, the blessing of the medicine man could not be videotaped. At this ceremony, Nada was bestowed with her Indian name. And a council of healers is praying for her recovery.
