Cancer Fatigue

When the diagnosis is cancer, it's normal for a person to feel overwhelmed.
Add to that the treatments which can zap any remaining energy.. and you have
total, debilitating exhaustion. April is Cancer Fatigue Awareness Month and today we meet one local woman who's fighting fatigue with inner strength and courage.

Trina Fentriss/cancer survivor - "I knew so little about brain tumors that my first conclusion was `oh my god. This is mortal. I'm gonna die.'"

For Trina Fentriss, a computer consultant for IBM in Southfield, the diagnosis of brain cancer was overwhelming. surgeons at the University of Michigan removed the golf-ball sized tumor and recommended that trina follow-up with chemotherapy and radiation.

Pearl Moore/Director, Oncology Nursing Society - "Often times when patients receive these treatments, normal cells as well as the cancer cells are affected, and as a result patients will often have a low red blood cell count and anemia is one of the prime causes of fatigue."

Trina - "You felt like you were wading through a fog, you were trying to understand how, or when, or am I ever going to get back to normal."

Trina fought-back by getting regular meals and nutritious snacks. She also made other lifestyle changes.

Trina - "What I did was to get lots and lots of naps and exercise. Those two seemed to be the strategies that worked for me."

pearl moore feed tape "Controlling the fatigue is extremely important. It, of course, will help patients feel so much better. But beyond that, it can be the difference
between continuing treatment or stopping treatment."

Trina is winning the battle against fatigue and cancer. Her disease is in remission and she has returned to work full-time.

Trina - "I just feel wonderful. I can work again. I'm getting a pupy this weekend. I
feel like my life has returned to normal, really."

The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center is sponsoring a
free program on Cancer Fatigue next Wednesday the 29th at the Livonia Holiday
Inn.
