Previous Stories Pregnancy and Exercise Every woman gains weight during pregnancy. It's a healthy and necessary part of having a baby. But just about every woman has concerns about getting back into pre-pregnancy shape. Exercising during pregnancy can help lose that extra and it has some other benefits as well. Jennifer Dukes is six-months pregnant. That's one of the reasons she's working out. Jennifer Dukes/ Expectant Mother - "With the weight that I'm carrying in front, it helps my muscles relax and I won't get an awful lot of cramps when I'm walking or sitting down." Exercising can also reduce back pain that is common during pregnancy, but certain exercises should be avoided. Kevin Carey, M.S./ Exercise Physiologist -"You want to make sure that you don't do any exercises in the supine position, or lying on your back. The reason for that is the blood flow has a tendency to decrease to the uterus when you are on your back." Many health clubs offer special instruction for expectant mothers. Low impact exercises like walking, swimming, and stretching are great for pregnant women. Jennifer Dukes - "I'm up and moving instead of slouching and not wanting to move, just want to be laying in the bed." Kevin Carey - "Exercise can help to increase the individual's stamina, strength, and flexibility which may help her get through some of the pushing stages of labor." Exercising during pregnancy also makes it easier to lose weight after the baby is born. Jennifer Dukes - "I went back to 1-0-3." In most cases, women can start working out about six- weeks after giving birth. A good general conditioning program using the legs, hips and abdomen will get you back in shape. Kevin Carey - "The key is to try to get back into a regular routine-- three or four times a week-- of cardiovascular conditioning you know which will help burn your calories and get you back down to your, or as close as possible to your pre-pregnancy weight." It's another kind of labor that pays off during pregnancy. It's important to note that you should consult your physician before you begin any exercise program. That's especially true if you're pregnant. Chances are your doctor will tell you that working out will make you look and feel better during and after your pregnancy.
