It's one of a new class of medications that block chemicals called Leukotrienes, which cause airways to narrow and fill with mucous. Forty-seven centers in the US and Canada tested the once-a-day chewable tablet in children six to fourteen years old. The results reported in today's Journal of The American Medical Association were encouraging. They were able to breathe more easily when we measured their breathing in our laboratories." Compared to the children given an inactive sugar pill, those taking Montelukast had fewer flare-ups of their asthma, they used less of other medications, and overall, enjoyed a better quality of life. Montelukast is designed to be used in addition to, not instead of, other asthma medications. There are still unanswered questions. Dr. Becker "We need to know how well Montelukast is going to work for the full spectrum of patients with asthma, in particular, children with mild asthma, those who have very severe asthma--- those two ends of the spectrum.
