Previous Stories New Back Pain Treatment Chronic back pain is the second most common reason Americans go to the doctor but treating that pain can be difficult. Channel 7 Healthy Living Reporter Denise Dador shows a new, "sharp" idea to ease muscle pain. Jerry Zaslow/suffered chronic pain "I have already done 14 marathons, and when I was, became restricted because of the extreme pain, I was quite upset." At 72, Jerry Zaslow knows pain. This businessman and running enthusiast has been dealing with extreme back pain for years. Dr. Jennifer Chu, M.D./ University of Pennsylvania; : "He has Spinal Stenosis, which is narrowing of the spinal canal, and he has moderate sized herniated disk, which is slipped disk." Jerry feared back surgery was his only option, but first he tried a new non-surgical procedure at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Jennifer Chu "Pain, especially when it's long standing, is because of nerve irritation that has made the muscle tight." This sewing machine-like device is called ATIOMS which stands for -- Automated Twitch-Obtaining Intramuscular Stimulation. Simply put, the device injects long thin pins in and out, where the irritated nerve and muscle meet. Dr. Jennifer Chu "when I find an area of nerve muscle junction that is very irritable, the muscle jumps. And I need that jumping because it's actually doing a massage inside the muscle." So, can physical therapy or massages do the same thing? Dr. Jennifer Chu "They would do somewhat the same thing, but they can reach only the superficial muscle layers, they cannot go in deep in there." Thanks to ATIOMS, Jerry avoided back surgery, and is back to his running. Jerry Zaslow "From a muscle viewpoint, I felt much better, much more flexible. I wasn't as tight." These days, Jerry believes he's won the race against pain. For more information, call Diane Giaccone with the University of Pennsylvania Public Relations Department at (215)662-2098.
