Ahhh, the soothing sounds of water and the smoldering aroma of fruit. It sounds like a visit to an exclusive health spa.

Dental Hygienist Joseph Mifsud at Lathrup Family Dentistry is using Aromatherapy and a meditation fountain to help put his patients at ease.

Joseph Mifsud - "It kind of helps them to relax. It gives them the tools that they need to relax."

Medical research shows 70 percent of all diseases stem from stress. And we all know how stressful a visit to the dentists office can be.

Patricia Higgins/Patient - "Ordinarily when you come to the dentist you get the disinfectant odor, and this is very nice."

Fear of the dentist's office usually begins in childhood. So Joseph Mifsud is using the stress management techniques on his youngest patients, too.

Joseph - "The kids love it. In fact, I had one patient throw a penny in the fountain.
She thought it was a wishing well."

Joseph -"It's very important that we take the comfort needs of our patients first, as a priority."

And patients are responding to this alternative approach.

Joseph - "Wonderfully. I can't get them to leave sometimes. They really like it.
They really responded well to it."

Patricia - "It's calming. It's a nice change. It takes you out of the fast pace. It
just calms the day."
