Randi Thomas knows about the challenges of raising a hearing impaired child. Her daughter, Skyler, was born with profound hearing loss. But researchers say millions more kids may be suffering from a more subtle form of hearing loss.. and not even know it. Dr. Fran Eldis/Detroit Children's Hospital-"They found a high incidence, 14 & 1/2 percent, had minor or mild reduction in hearing." The study published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association looked at children ages six to 19, and found many of them can only hear sounds in the middle frequency range. Children with low or high frequency loss may not be able to hear key vowel sounds or make out the endings of words, or hear certain consonants like f, s, or th. Dr. Eldis-"So there are characteristics of the message that could be lost." Randy- "I don't think the parents realize how much it's gonna affect the kids in their education, finding jobs." Teenagers appear to be bringing-on their own problems.. by listening to loud music with headphones. In younger kids, the cause is usually illness. Dr. Eldis-"The most prevalent cause is chronic middle ear infections, or chronic fluid with no ear infections." It's important that these children be diagnosed and treated.
