Previous Story Prostate Cancer Vaccine It could be the beginning of a whole new way to treat cancer. The first clinical results are in for the Prostate cancer vaccine. And for advanced cancer patients who are looking for a last-resort treatment, the results are promising. Roland Joslyn/Prostate vaccine patient-"You always hope that something is going to cure you, so when I was offered the opportunity to go into this trial I was eager for it." Dr. Gerald Murphy/Northwest Hospital Research Director-"Out of 33 individuals who went through this program and received the treatments, we have nine, 27-percent, who showed what we call a partial response. That is a response also that's lasted for several months." The Prostate cancer vaccine is a type of immunotherapy that has been tested on patients with advanced cancer. Roland Joslyn-"My Prostate cancer did not develop any further than when I first went into it. In fact, there was sometimes when I got the blood results which showed I was beating the Prostate cancer." The therapy begins with dendritic cells that are drawn from the patient's blood. Dendritic cells are white blood cells which can stimulate an immune response. These cells are exposed to protein from the patient's tumor and injected back into the patient. The cell takes this encoding to the patient's immune system, sharing it's targeting information with so-called 'helper' t-cells shown in pink, and 'killer' t-cells shown in red. These t-cells then recognize the tumor protein as a foreign substance, and destroy the cancer cells. A different 'vaccine' is created for each patient. The patients tested had failed to respond to other treatments. Dr. Gerald Murphy-"People at this point in time have a very short prognosis, or short life expectancy, and these results and the turning around of this progression are very noteworthy." This newly-refined vaccine will be involved in clinical trials at the University of Michigan Medical Center next. U-of-M is still six months away from enrolling patients in the study.
