Blood Disorders & J.P. McCarthy Foundation

Hundreds of people in our area are feeling betrayed by their own blood.
They are battling diseases like Leukemia, which attack the blood cells.
It's been more than two years since Detroit radio legend J.P. McCarthy lost
his battle against a blood disorder. But today, others are benefiting from his memory.

Bob Henry/Bone Marrow Transplant recipient - "Being an athlete, it was a great shock to me at first."

It was two years ago, during a routine insurance exam, that golf pro Bob Henry
learned he had Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, a rare blood disorder. It's related to Myelo Displastic Syndrome, the disease which claimed the life of J.P. McCarthy.


J.P. died before a bone marrow match could be found. For Bob, the news was much different.

Bob Henry - "The unique thing for me, being one of the lucky people, is that they found not only one donor, they found five donors for me with a perfect match."

Bob underwent the bone marrow transplant in November. But hundreds of other
people in Metro Detroit are still waiting.

Dr. Melvin Lester/J.P. McCarthy Foundation - "What really needs to be done is
to increase the odds of getting a match."

J.P.'s doctor, Melvin Lester, is now a medical advisor to the J.P. McCarthy
Foundation, which funds bone marrow drives and research.

Dr. Lester -"In 1997, the foundation gave 250-thousand dollars in research
grants to the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State
University."

The goal is that someday, there will be five perfect matches for everyone who
needs a bone marrow transplant, like Bob.

Dr. Lester - "Everybody has a community responsibility. Nobody knows who's
going to get hit with this disease."

Bob Henry -"I'm an individual sitting here who's proof you can survive Leukemia, and the donors make it possible."

On Sunday, Channel Seven teams up with WJR radio for a day-long telethon to
benefit the J.P McCarthy Foundation. The special broadcast begins with Action News Sunday Morning at 7:30am.
