"Designer" Estrogen

Women who feel forced to choose between estrogen therapy and an increased
risk for cancer have a new option today. You could call it "designer estrogen."

At age 71, Ruth latter loves life.

Ruth Latter/breast cancer patient - "I have a lot of activities, I enjoy myself and we have a business and I'm an art critic."

But she's had some hard times. After menopause, she started taking estrogen
pills. Then she developed breast cancer. She believes the two were connected.

Ruth Latter - "I really do think so. because I felt absolutely marvelous and there was no history of breast cancer in our family."

That's one of the concerns about taking estrogen. While it protects against
Osteoporosis and heart disease, it does put you an increased risk of breast
cancer.

Richard Santen, M.D./Assoc. Prof. of Medicine, University of Virginia Health
System - "She will have, at worst analysis, a one out of one-hundred chance of getting a breast cancer that she would not have had."

Doctor Richard Santen of the University of Virginia Health System says now
there's a new option for women like Ruth. The Food and Drug Administration has
approved Raloxifene, an estrogen-like drug.

Richard Santen, M.D. - "So now we have almost a designer estrogen, which gives us a beneficial effect on breast, and at the same time, a beneficial effect on the bone and on the heart."

Doctor Santen says Raloxifene is a little bit weaker than estrogen itself.  Clinical trials show it can increase bone mineral density by two to three percent. So what type of woman should consider Raloxifene?

Richard Santen, M.D. - "Women who are very frightened about estrogen, and have a risk of heart disease or bone disease."

Ruth hasn't made up her mind yet about taking this new drug, but she says it's
a decision she plans to make with the help of her doctor.

Estrogen has also been linked to protecting against Alzheimer's disease. But
Raloxifene does not seem to produce the same effect on the brain.
