Dizziness

It can be frightening and uncomfortable. Suddenly the world around you is
spinning.

Attacks of dizziness strike millions of Americans.

Susan Gentleman/had dizzy spells - "I woke up in the middle of the night feeling as though I were spinning at
very, very high speed."

Susan Brewer/had dizzy spells - "It's just total uneasiness, dizziness. the whole room spins."

For people who experience vertigo, or extreme dizziness, few things are more
frightening.

Susan Brewer - "My worst fear was getting into a car, and experiencing it and
getting into a major wreck."

Doctors say while some people get dizzy from an illness, the most common cause
is something called benign positional vertigo. Tiny calcium granules in the
inner ear break loose from trauma or age, and slip into the ear canal.

Dennis Fitzgerald, M.D./Neurologist, Washington Hospital Center -
"Then, when the patient gets into a critical position, and most commonly that
position is to lie in bed or roll over in bed, the particles stimulate the
inner ear, causing the illusion of very severe spinning."

The good news is that doctors at Washington Hospital Center have now found a
way to quickly and painlessly move the particles out of harm's way.

Dennis Fitzgerald, M.D. - "Well what we've learned is that, by doing a very
simple head-rolling maneuver, we can reposition the small granules that have
fallen out of place."

Using a vibrating device to stimulate movement, the doctor gently rolls the
head and neck. the treatment typically takes two to three minutes.

Susan Brewer - "We did it twice, I left, I never felt dizzy since then. pretty
amazing."

After a treatment, patients are asked to temporarily avoid bending forward at
the waist, and to sleep with a reading pillow that has arms on the side. Those
measures keep the granules from slipping back.

Many first-time patients believe they have a brain tumor when dizziness hits.
that's rarely the cause, and 90-percent of the time dizziness can be treated
with the head-rolling maneuver.
