Previous Story Heart Defects in Children, New Procedure Millions of children are born with heart defects. For one common problem, a new surgical procedure is being tested to avoid open-heart surgery. Three-year-old Bryanna Solomon is an active little girl, but not too long ago, this little girl had a very big problem with a special blood vessel that is only open until you're born. William Decampli, M.D., Ph.D. "It normally closes shortly after birth. But in some minority of children fails to close, resulting in persistent but inappropriate blood flow between the right and left sides of the heart." The condition is called Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA. Left untreated, it can cause several problems, including congestive heart failure. Traditional surgery requires a large surgical incision, and separating the ribs. But Doctor William Decampli, at children's hospital of New Jersey in Newark, offered Bryanna's parents a less invasive technique: tiny instruments and a t-v camera inserted through several small holes. Jennifer Solomon, Bryanna's mother "It appeared to be much safer and it wouldn't affect her so much in the, you know, in the future." William Decampli, M.D., Ph.D. "I think the approach is superior to what the naked eye can do. The lens actually has superior optical properties as compared with the naked eye." The smaller incisions mean less of a chance for infection and scaring. William Decampli, M.D., Ph.D "With the absence of rib spreading, there's much less discomfort felt after the operation by the child." In fact, Bryanna was released from the hospital on the day of the procedure. Jennifer Solomon, Bryan's mother - "She was up walking around actually the following day, but she was back to her normal self within a week." Now Bryanna's biggest problem is not getting enough time in the playroom. Doctor Decampli says not only is this surgery less invasive, but children feel calmer and can recuperate better at home.
