Previous Story Prostate Cancer Part 1 Detective Sipowitz deals with a life and death drama involving an all too common illness. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of death in men after lung cancer. The problem is, it's a message men don't want to hear. Art Szatkowski/Prostate cancer patient - "I did not even think I had prostate cancer." It was the furthest thing from Art Szatkowski's mind when he went to see his doctor. Art Szatkowski - "Hah.. what me? At my age!.. That was my reaction." What Art didn't know was that the risk of Prostate cancer increases in men age 50 and older. In tonight's episode of NYPD Blue, detective Sipowitz finds out his diagnosis. But not every diagnosis needs to be this dramatic. Prostate cancer is called the silent killer because for many men it sneaks up on them, without warning and often without symptoms. That's why a yearly blood screening test for a specific protein called PSA is so important. Dr. Duke Bahn/Crittenton Hospital - "Since 1980, the mortality rate was going up steadily. The mortality rate is going down. It appears we're getting a handle on it." Part of the reason, more men getting regular PSA tests. Dr. Duke Bahn/Crittenton Hospital - "Just like any other cancer, early detection better chance of survival." The American Cancer Society's current guidelines recommend all men age 50 get yearly PSA's. Men with a family history should start at age 40 and since African American men have nearly double the risk of white men, they should also start screening early. Art Szatkowski - "It's a very personal thing." But like many men, Art didn't believe in PSA testing. Art Szatkowski - "I'm as guilty as the next guy." So if art's doctor didn't' catch his cancer at the stage he did, Art Szatkowski - "I could've been in a real deep trouble today. No doubt about it." Art is a private man, but just like the producer's of tonight's NYPD Blue, he wanted to take this opportunity to send a very important message. Art Szatkowski/Prostate Cancer patient - "People that know me a lot of good treatments out there." Art Szatkowski caught his cancer early enough to be eligible for a new treatment that's proving to be very successful. The procedure at Crittenton Hospital destroys prostate cancer cells while preserving function. Here are the risk factors: African American men are twice as likely to get Prostate cancer than white men. The older you get, the higher your risk. Other factors include a family history, eating a high fat diet and high testosterone levels. Home | Upcoming Stories | Previous Stories |Survey | About Healthy Living | E-Mail
