Water Test

Linda Bezemek/three months pregnant - "I try to get my eight glasses in a day."

It's the first piece of medical advice pregnant women get from their o-b's..drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day. But a report linking tap water to miscarriages in California frightened women across the country.

Linda Bezemek - "My husband heard it. He came home and was concerned. And he suggested maybe I buy some bottled water."

Linda was reacting to an EPA study in Los Angeles, which found that women who
drank at least five glasses of tap water a day had nearly a 16-percent risk of
miscarriage in the first trimester. The danger was traced to tri-halo-methanes, or t-t-h-ms.

Sy Freilich/Aquatest Labs of White Lake, Michigan "TTHMS are a natural byproduct of chlorine when its used to disinfect water. Chlorine mixes with organic material to create TTHMS."

T-T-H-MS measure over 75 parts per billion in l-a. But what about Detroit?
We put our tap water to the test.

We tested the water from four communities in the metro area. First we put
hydrochorlic acid in the special sample container treated with ascorbic acid.
Then we filled it with water, and sealed it with an air-tight cap. Then we
shipped the samples to a testing facility.

Sy Freilich/Aquatest Labs - "We found they came in at 14 to 16 parts per billion, which is well below the EPA standard of 70."

Our water samples from downtown Detroit, Royal Oak and Riverview all tested at
16 parts per billion. Westland tested at 14 parts per billion.

Sy Freilich/Aquatest Labs - "Pregnant women are advised to drink a lot of water and we're fortunate in Detroit to have some of the best water in the country."

In fact, Detroit tap water may even be a safer choice than bottled water.

Sy Freilich/Aquatest Labs - "The bottlers are not required to perform as many tests as the City of Detroit water people are required to perform."

Some bottled water is nothing more than tap water bottled in another city, like
this sample from Worthington, Ohio.

Sy Freilich/Aquatest Labs - "The water we get here in Detroit in my opinion is superior to bottled water."

Linda Bezemek - "You'd think the bottled water should be pure. That's why you buy it. That's why you pay money for it. you think that it should be better."

The test showed the tap water in Linda's home is perfectly safe.

Linda Bezemek - "Well I'm very happy to hear that. I'll probably just switch back to the tap water."
