Fetermine-Prozac Weightloss Drug

Ever since Phen-Fen was banned for weight loss, clinics are now prescribing a
new combination, Phentermine and Prozac to help people lose weight. As Denise
Dador reports none of this is government approved.

Theresa Gertsler/lost 183 pounds - "I was able to lose 183 pounds. It was no
less than a miracle."

Theresa Gerstler began her incredible weight-loss odyssey on Phen-Fen, the
controversial combination of Phentermine and Fenfluramine. But then
Fenfluramine, or Redux, was pulled off the market for safety concerns.

Theresa - "I was in tears, thinking it's gonna happen again. My success will be
sabotaged."

But Theresa kept on losing weight. And she kept on taking diet pills.

Many doctors have switched from Phen-Fen to Phen-Pro, a combination of the
appetite suppressant Phentermine and Prozac, an anti-depressant.

Theresa took a different brand medication called Ionamin on the same regimin.
And a new diet drug hit the market last week called Meridia.

Theresa -"The medications got me started. They were necessary to begin this
program."

All of these medications alter brain chemistry in some way. But the maker of
Prozac, Eli Lilly, has warned one weight loss chain that Prozac has never been
tested for weight control.

The letter to Nutri-System says:

"Your company's campaign is irresponsible and creates potential public health
issues and could mislead consumers."

It's important to note that Prozac has been proven safe for depression. And the
dosages prescribed for Phen-Pro are much, much lower.

The new drug, Meridia, is also supposed to be safer than Redux.

Dr. Jerome Cooper/Medical Weight Loss Centers - "There is no evidence of
cardiovalvular disease or any evidence of any primary pulmonary hypertension
and that is the major difference."

Generally, drug therapy is only prescribed when the patient needs to lose at
least 20-percent of his or her body weight.

And unlike the pill-mills for Phen-Fen that prescribed by telephone or
Internet, patients need to be monitored regularly.

Dr. cooper - "We see our patients three times in the first month, then monthly
as long as they're on the medication."

Theresa - "Although there may be side effects, I am a far healthier person now.

"Because I was having heart problems, difficulty breathing."

"I feel good. I feel proud."

"I feel great for who I am and what I've accomplished."

Some doctors believe Phen-Pro works because it addresses the
obsessive-compulsive nature of some dieters. The combination has not been
clinically tested. Meridia, which helped patients lose up to 10-percent of
their body mass in clinical trials, did raise blood pressure in some patients.

The bottom line, dieters who choose drugs require strict medical supervision.
