Previous Story Angel Wings - Heart Surgery Being born with a hole in the heart wall is a common birth defect. Until now, doctors performed open heart surgery to patch up the hole. This meant a week in the hospital and months recovering. Now for the time, doctors at Children's Hospital can do the same thing with just a 24 hour stay. Doctors predict this new device appropriately called "Angel Wings" will revolutionize the way these patients are treated. This less invasive procedure surely softens the blow for parents just learning their kids have this condition. Connie Cochran/Aaron's mother - "Probably the scariest thing, knocked us right down because we didn't what it was." 15 year old Aaron Cochran never thought he'd find himself on an operating table. After all he's an avid athlete who plays basketball, football and runs track. But three months ago, he fell mysteriously ill. Scott Cochran/Aaron's father - "He got hurt playing football. We thought it was his ribs or something, but we took him to the doctor and they heard a murmur." That murmur was actually a hole in his heart wall. He was born with it. Atrial Septal defect is a common birth defect. Excess blood flow through this hole is lifethreatening. Thomas Forbes - "Usually discovered early on like in Aaron's case on when you're 30 or 40 later on." For the first time on a child, Dr. Thomas Forbes and Dr. Julie Vincent of Children's Hospital used an investigational device called "Angel Wings." They deliver it through a catheter. Dr. in surgery - "Can I get a wire. Need a needle here." Dr. Julie Vincent - "We can mesh it up, pop it in the catheter closes the hole." The Angel Wings procedure takes about three hours. If Aaron had recieved open heart surgery he would be in the hospital for five days. With this new procedure he goes home in 24 hours. Dr. Julie Vincent - "No open heart surgery. Dont' have to stop the heart. Just make contact and go." Dr. Julie Vincent - "After we're done, put a bandaid on both legs, that's it." It sounded so simple. Before the surgery, Aaron wasn't the least bit nervous. Aaron Cochran - "I get to miss a day of school so that's good." Doctors say Aaron can even go skiing as early as saturday. Dr. Thomas Forbes/Children's Hospital Cardiologist " I'd anticipate his prognosis is as good as any other kid with a normal heart." Scott Cochran - "He's ready to go already. Kind of remarkable."
