Drowsy Drivers

This is the first study to compare drunk driving with drowsy driving. From a police officer's point of view.. it's hard to spot the difference.

This is Wayne County Sheriff's video of a drunk driver about to be pulled
over..

But researchers say this driver's behavior is similar to what you'd see in a
person who's lost a few hours of sleep.

Dr. Timothy Roehrs - "Losing four hours of sleep equivalent to drinking three beers."

Last June, limousine driver Richard Gnida told investigators he fell asleep
at the wheel when he crashed into a tree injuring three members of the Redwings
organization.

Dr. Timothy Roehrs - "All of the evidence at least the descriptions I've heard show that there was a sleep driver involved."

The National Sleep Foundation found that if you stay up for 24 hours
straight your driving performance is equivalent to that of someone who is
legally drunk. Local researchers believe drowsy drivers should be viewed as a serious public health hazard.

Dr. Timothy Roehrs - "Most people need to get 8 to 8 1/2 hours of sleep."

Judging from the number of sleep related accidents on the road, the Wayne
County Sheriff's Department says drowsy drivers are a growing problem.

Robert Ficano/Wayne County Sheriff's Department - "It is a growing
problem."

Henry Ford researchers found that men and women between the ages of 26
and 35, who were single and worked full time averaged 6.7 hours of sleep each
weeknight. That's way below the amount needed for maximum effectiveness.

Dr. Timothy Roehrs/Henry Ford Hospital -  "We live in a 24 hour society. There
are a lot of sleepy people walking around."

If you're not feeling refreshed when you wake up in the morning, chances are
you're not getting enough rest. Interesting to note, married people reported getting more sleep than single people.

Same time experts recommend to keep your sleep cycle in check try to wake up at the same time regardless what time you sleep.

Don't nap too late. Don't nap too close to bed time.

Catch up with naps and keep in mind... power napping will help you get caught up.
also if you're a healthy individual with trouble sleeping you may want to

To participate in an ongoing Henry Ford sleep study.
