Smoking and Depression

Keith Graus/smoker for 15 years - "When I'm depressed or on hard times, I smoke more."

Keith Graus believes there's a connection between smoking and mental health.
And a study published today by researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit
backs him up.

Dr. Naomi Breslau/Henry Ford Hospital Researcher - "People with a history of
depression were much more likely to progress to daily smoking."

Doctor Naomi Breslau found that 23-percent of depression patients studied
increased from occasional to regular, daily smoking. Researchers wanted to
know which came first, the cigarettes or the depression. The answer is.. both.

Dr. Naomi Breslau - "People who never had depression before were much more
likely to have a first incident of depression if they smoked daily."

Scientists do not know if the causal link is chemical, or if smokers and
depression sufferers share some common genetic predisposition. Whatever the
cause, smokers we talked with admit that when the going gets tough, they
light-up.

Dino Gravinis/smoker -"When you have depression, you smoke more. I catch
myself doing that."

Leslie Parks/smoker - "I observed a link between stress and smoking. That's
certainly true in my book."

The bright spot in the study is that a history of depression is no excuse for
failing to kick the habit.

Dr. Breslau -"What our study shows is that a history of depression is
absolutely no hindrance for quitting."
