Nutrition
and Your Eyes
When an opthamolgist peers into your eyes, he can tell much
more than if you simply need glasses. Your eyes show a vision
of your health and nutrition plays a major role in early prevention.
Mary
Legette is a vision of good health. She eats right in hopes
of keeping her eyes and body healthy.
"I
do consume all of those foods that would be conducive for
my health as far as my vision thinking," she says.
Opthamologist
Dr. Anthony Poretta of Providence Hospital believes the key
to preventing eye disease is good nutrition.
"The antioxidant vitamins A, E and C and the trace elements
of magnesium and zinc are essential for the health of the
macula," he says.
Since
none of us really have broccoli and spinach at every meal
and the elderly population rarely eats like they should, nutrition
supplementation, while second best, is a practical approach.
So
for someone like Mary, who is just now beginning to wear reading
glasses at the age of 47, eating right seems to be keeping
her seeing right.
"I do think the nutrition is a factor in how you feel and
I do think it effects your overall body functions," she says.
