Support Groups

Breast Cancer Support Group ... Offers women with breast cancer the opportunity to discuss concerns, treatment, body-image, fears and other feelings. This group meets the first Wednesday of the month. For more information or to register, call 313-343-3684.

Cancer Support Group ... A support group designed for those living with cancer. People with cancer and those close to them gain support by sharing similar experiences and concerns. A health care professional facilitates the group sessions and is there to provide information. This group meets the first and third Thursday of the month. For more information or to register, call Donna Handley, 313-343-4970.

Depression and Manic Depression Support Group ... This group offers support for people with depression through a discussion forum with occasional speakers. Individuals with depression and manic depression illness and their family members, friends and students are welcome. Meetings are the first and third Sunday of the month. For more information, call 313-343-7000.

Mom to Mom Support Group ... Having a baby often brings more questions than you think. Join us to talk with a nurse about being a new mother, learn from other moms and support each other in this new and challenging role. Each week we will have introductions of moms and their babies, things to celebrate, a topic of your choice, a time to visit and share helpful tips.

Nar-Anon ... This group provides support for family and close friends of drug abusers and meets every Sunday.

Open Arms Grieving Children's Program ... Open Arms is a community program of St. John Health System and Eastwood Clinics. It offers free support groups for children and family members who are grieving the loss of a loved one due to violence, illness or accident. Designed to help children understand death and the grieving process, the program helps participants cope with feelings of anger, sadness or loss. A general grief support group meets on Thursday evenings. A group for survivors of homicide meets on Tuesday evenings. All participants are screened prior to admission into the program. For information, call 313-921-7983. There is no charge to participate in the program. Open Arms is located at 11148 Harper on Detroit's east side.

Second Chance Heartline ... All medical and surgical cardiac patients, spouses or friends are welcome to participate in this group that meets bi-monthly the first Tuesday of the month. Guest speakers provide information about medical and surgical treatment of heart disease, medications and other health related topics. Meetings are both informational and social. Volunteers from this group visit cardiovascular surgery patients in the hospital to offer support and answer non-medical questions. Second Wind Stroke Group ... This support group provides education and socialization for stroke patients, their family members or caregivers. Guest speakers, occupational therapist, social worker and RN present information. Meetings are the second Thursday of each month. For more information or to register, call 313-343-3747.

Together Let's Cope (TLC) ... A parent-to-parent support group specifically for parents who have a child in NICU or Special Care Nursery at St. John Hospital or any other facility. Phone support is also available. For more information, call the TLC coordinator, Laurie Jensen, 313-343-3868.

Us Too! Support Group ... This group helps those newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and survivors of prostate cancer and prostate disease and their families lead healthy and productive lives, physically, mentally and spiritually, by offering fellowship, shared counseling and discussion sessions pertaining to updated and medical options and positive mental outlook. The group meets the second Wednesday of each month. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.
