General Assignment Reporter Kristin Smith joined the "Action News" team in December 2001. It is a return to the Motor City for Smith, who previously spent five years as an anchor and reporter at WKBD-TV UPN-50.

Smith's love for journalism started in the 7th-grade and it's taken her around the country to cover a number of national stories, including the 1994 Los Angeles earthquake, Arizona's controversial biosphere and several serial killers. She earned numerous Associated Press awards for breaking news reporting and two Emmy nominations, including one for a feature on the 1997 Red Wings' Stanley Cup victory.

Born in St. Louis, Smith attended the University of Missouri-Columbia Journalism School. She started her career at the university's NBC affiliate, KOMU-TV. After graduating with a broadcast degree, she moved on to anchor and report at WTHI-TV in Terre Haute, IN, WJTV in Jackson, MS and KVOA-TV in Tucson, AZ.

Smith enjoys running, golf and Red Wings hockey. She is married and has a son named Jack.
