Erik
Smith has been giving Detroiters their morning "wake-up call"
for over thirty years.
The popular anchorman of Channel 7's "Action News This Morning"
joined the station in 1962 as a soundman. In 1963, Smith became
a part-time reporter in Channel 7's then tiny six-person news
department. The rest, as they say, is local history.
For nearly forty years, Smith has also covered the major news
stories in metropolitan Detroit, including the 1967 riot,
the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, the tragedy of Flight 255
and the Ford Rouge Plant explosion. He has interviewed every
president since John F. Kennedy and he was the last reporter
to talk with the late Malcolm X before his murder in 1965.
In addition to anchoring "Action News This Morning," Smith
hosts the multiple award-winning series "From
The Heart." Erik's
experience and warm, home-spun manner make him a complete
natural as host and narrator of this series. The ongoing series
of compelling, emotionally charged short programs captures
the spirit and heart of the metro Detroit community.
The
veteran reporter/anchor is the most honored on-air
personality in metro Detroit. He spends his leisure
time gardening, writing music and racing cars with
his son, Kristian. His daughter, Sarah, is a TV producer.
A Detroit area native, Smith resides in the Brighton
area with his wife Sharon.
