Ray Sayah
Ray
Sayah was named co-anchor of "UPN Detroit Action
News" in December of 2002.
Since
joining Channel 7 in December of 2000, as a general
assignment reporter, Sayah has enjoyed his share of
exciting experiences.
Whether covering the hard crime stories that make
it to the forefront of every newscast, sensitive cultural
issues relating to Middle Eastern crises, or lighter
features that introduce him to characters within metro
Detroit, Sayah considers his job as a reporter both
a privilege and a responsibility.
Born
in Iran, Sayah fled with his family to the U.S. following
the Islamic Revolution of 1979. While growing up as
an Iranian American in Philadelphia during the early
80s, Sayah encountered varying degrees of cultural
intolerance, often finding himself stereotyped.
For
this native speaker of Farci, however, experiencing
such backward attitudes firsthand has only taught
him to hold a greater respect for the diversity of
cultures he interacts with daily in metro Detroit.
After
graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications
from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California,
Sayah earned a Master's Degree in Journalism from
the University of Missouri where he worked at the
school's NBC affiliate KOMU-TV.
In
Missouri, Sayah was a one-man news crew, working as
writer, reporter, cameraman and videographer. In 1996,
he joined WTAJ-TV in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where
he worked as a reporter, bureau chief and part-time
anchor.
Prior
to coming to Channel 7, Sayah worked at WTVR-TV in
Richmond, Virginia where he was a general assignment
reporter and a political reporter covering the legislative
assembly.
Sayah received national attention when he revealed
that the Virginia State Governor had missed the deadline
for filing his census documents. Sayah often speaks
to children at local schools. He enjoys basketball
and listening to music and lives in Oakland County.
